When I applied and was finally approved, I had a couple of years back pay coming, I had received a settlement from the state workers comp. ins. and SS just took that amount from my back pay...

Added: they sometimes do an offset where they take some each month til it is payed off also..Now to be honest this has been my experience and it was about 25 years ago so things may have changed some since then.
