When somebody is allowed to die by exposure, malnourishment, disease, or untreated wounds, no human was involved in killing them. Authorities let nature take its course.

The acronym began with the LAPD years ago but has since evolved. In the US, when a prisoner is found dead and there are no signs of foul play, many guards write down "NHI.' The other day an alleged hate crime suspect was found dead in his jail cell with no signs of foul play. Someone posted it on DU. I surmise those guards or jailhouse deputies scribbled "NHI" in their log books (i.e. nobody killed him-- he died on his own).
