Otherwise why don't the release the hostages? That would be a great way to pressure Israel to dial back the hostilities.

Hamas and their supporters think they are winning and believe that soon the world powers will dismantle Israel and exile the Jews back to Europe. It's just a matter of time and determination. (See media coverage and politician stmts).
