2. Many "diesel" locomotives are "diesel-electric"

It seems reasonable to think that you could put a fuel cell in place of the diesel engine, to make it a FCEV, but… obviously… that would be a lot of work, what is the age of the fleet? (i.e. how much work should you put into retrofitting a 20 year old locomotive? a 10 year old locomotive?)

The extensive work necessary would not be cheap, and the result would not be ideal. How much less would it cost than purchasing a brand-new locomotive designed and built "from the get-go” to run on hydrogen?
