Amazon settles with 2 former employees who alleged retaliation firings [View all]

Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) settled with two tech workers who accused the company of firing them in retaliation for criticizing the e-commerce giant's climate change stance and warehouse conditions.

Maren Costa and Emily Cunningham were fired in April 2020 and accused Amazon of doing so days before a "virtual walkout" they had been trying to convince colleagues to participate in. The two were leaders of a group called Amazon Employees for Climate Justice.

As part of the settlement, Amazon is required to pay Costa and Cunningham their lost wages and to notify tech and warehouse workers that the company can't fire them for organizing.

The National Labor Relations Board decided in April that evidence supported the employees' retaliation allegations and said the retaliation was illegal. Amazon said it didn't fire Costa and Cunningham based on certain posts, but for repeatedly violating policies about commenting on the company's internal operations without approval.
