I think you'll find getting cash and votes is much easier with some common-sense grassroots organization. Many of the consultants do "think too narrow-minded" but there are also some time-tested basics to forming any movement that can't be overcome without putting the hard-work in that going grassroots requires:

From Chapter 5 "Finance and Fundraising:"

Got a problem asking for money? Get over it. Fundraising is not simply about asking people for money; it is about offering people an opportunity to participate. It is not your place to tell people if and how they can participate. Let the donor decide, but give them the opportunity to make that decision.
