my Kung Fu teacher put on a very similar demonstration.

3 students were placed around a table, one laying on the table with a watermelon on his chest, and two more standing at either end facing the table with cucumbers hung by string from the neck.

Then the master was blindfolded and spun around and drew his sword and deftly cut the cucumbers and then the watermelon.

There was a trick... the sword was very sharp... the students stiffened their abdomens with a "ki-yi" scream... and the master DID NOT pull the sword in any cutting motion while chopping the veggies / fruit.

chopping generally does not break the skin if the sharp edge is not drawn across the skin. The stiff fruit / vegetables chop easily thus allowing them to be chopped in half. The students, by stiffening their abdomens, provide a hard surface as the "chopping table".

I was one of the students, standing at the head of the table.

girls thought of me as some sort of tough brave guy (probably for the first time). LOL
