"sleeping there after a day feeding on olive tree parasites in the countryside. " Looks like they keep the olive tree parasites in check. Get rid of the birds, affects the olive trees.

Communist China tried to eradicate all the birds a while back saying they ate grain . There was a big push and they wiped out a lot of birds only to discover it increased the insect population which did more damage.

Nature is a fine balance.
