I get the impression they know more than they are letting out. Of course they are looking for her, the weapon and the culprit. but I feel as if they are looking for something that is missing from the house perhaps

the cops were specific about a couple of things: she was there when it happened, and she was alive after it happened.

the bad guys had only 4 minutes to get away. they must have known 911 was called because of the phone and perhaps the pinged back call. they had to bundle the girl out in a hurry
