These people were/are in a cult, but illiterate they are not. (I suspect you were going for a simple insult, though.) They had deep ties in Silicon Valley subcultures intertwined with computer and tech fields that didn't exist when I was in college (afaik). They read, think, and create, however evil things turned in the end.

I think a more apt comparison what happens when people fall into cults and follow them down rabbit holes -- regardless of how a person starts out. After that? Some cults have access to firearms, while some have missiles, drones...and impunity.
