Two Cheers for Papi Cruz! [View all]

Two cheers for Rafael Cruz, Ted Cruz’s dad! Yes, I know that this sounds weird, especially coming from a Democrat posting on a Democratic forum, but hear me out.

Rafael Cruz senior might currently be a fiery evangelical and a member of the political far right. That’s what he is now, and I do not dispute that.

But in his youth, Rafael Cruz stood against Fulgencio Batista, the strongman who overthrew Cuba’s last democratically-elected government, and later against Fidel Castro, the man who instituted a Marxist dictatorship on the island.

Contrast this to Senator Ted. When the mob stormed the Capitol on January 6th, while Representative Alread was preparing to fight for his life and the US Constitution, Ted went and hid in a closet. Later, when the man who encouraged and helped organize the attack on the Capitol, Ted voted for acquittal, choosing to let the man who organize the attack unpunished.

Texans across the political spectrum should remember this before casting their ballots. Behavior like the instigator’s should be punished.

This should not be a partisan choice. Senators and other politicians who put their careers first and the Constitution second should be removed from office, regardless of party affiliation. Ted Cruz thinks that he’ll get a pass from his constituents. He should not.

Vote against Ted Cruz this year.
