A drag queen is a person who dresses in women’s clothing and makeup to imitate and exaggerate female gender roles and signifiers for entertainment purposes.

During the last legislative session and over the previous few years. Republicans have been gung-ho about banning drag performances in the state of Texas because they viewed all drag shows as “sexual performances” and acts that were done to indoctrinate children. In 2023, nearly a dozen bills were filed to ban drag shows in Texas completely.

According to the bill that Nate Schatzline filed, a “drag performance” is when a performer exhibits a gender identity that is different than the performer’s gender at birth.
