Gov. Greg Abbott is ordering the Texas Legislature back into a special session starting immediately after the House and Senate failed to pass any meaningful property tax reform on the final day of the regular session.

Abbott said the special session, which started at 9 p.m. on Monday, will only focus on property tax cuts and border security but promised more special sessions later this year to address a host of other priorities the Legislature failed to deliver on.

“Several special sessions will be required,” he said. “To ensure that each priority receives the time and attention it deserves to pass into law, only a few will be added each session.”......

Special sessions can last a maximum of 30 days, though lawmakers aren't required to meet for that long. Some special sessions in Texas history have lasted only 1 day with the Legislature refusing to pass a governor's priorities. The Texas Constitution only allows lawmakers to take up what Abbott puts on the agenda
