AI appears in the Albuquerque mayoral race [View all]

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – An AI video mimicking Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller’s (D) voice has added a twist to the mayoral race, raising concerns about AI’s role in politics.

The video, which falsely portrays Keller’s voice, is part of the intense runoff between the incumbent mayor and challenger Darren White. KOB political expert Tim Krebs said AI in elections is a growing tactic that demands vigilance.

“This is a part of our world now and it requires people to learn more about it,” said Krebs.

In 2024, New Mexico lawmakers passed a law requiring disclosure of AI use in campaign ads, with penalties for distributing fake AI election content.
