7. I never understood the great need some people have to vote 3 or 6 months in advance

things can and do change. It's not just the president, but innumerable races down ballot, and judicial ones on the other side. And not all races are D vs. R, plenty of city and local and judges are "non-partisan", though I try to ferret out their leanings from Google searches, I can't always find enough info. And of course in primaries (which Minnesota has in August for non-presidential candidates -- we had our presidential primary on Super Tuesday March 3), it's never D vs. R. And candidates dropping out or getting into some scandal happens often enough to be wary about voting way in advance.
