Lots more votes in the DFL primaries in 2016 yet Trump came dangerously close to winning the state.

I think Democrats are more motivated to vote in the primaries. You've heard the old saying - "Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line." A lot of Repubs don't care who wins the primary - they just show up to vote for their candidate in November.
