Many of the questions dealt with what one attendee called "the elephant in the room"--the continuing partial federal government shutdown--and President Trump's continuing call for funding for a border wall across the southern border. Ernst reiterated previous comments that the wall would not span the entire border--she says technology could be used to cover areas where land doesn't allow for a barrier. The senator also says a border wall isn't a new idea.
