House Democrats: No need to increase gas tax for road funding [View all]

Indiana House Democrats on Monday proposed an alternative way to raise money for road funding that wouldn't rely on a gas tax increase, though it would freeze other pending tax cuts.

Their proposal would raise about $900 million each year by freezing future corporate income tax cuts, cutting "waste, fraud and abuse" and dedicating all sales tax on gasoline and special fuels directly to roads immediately.

It also would rely on reducing the almost $2 billion surplus that Republicans have touted to around $1.3 billion, while reducing waste by $300 million per year, Democratic Leader Scott Pelath said Monday.

“It’s not necessary to have new taxes or tolls in order to reinvest," Pelath said. "The problem we have up until this point is not a problem of revenue. It’s been a problem of priorities."
