Anti-LGBTQ+ bills in Legislature labeled 'license to discriminate' by Central Florida advocates [View all]
Diversity, inclusion and the possibility of living an open and genuine life in Florida are being threatened, according to LGBTQ+ and Hispanic groups and allies that are asking the community to get together against several bills in the Legislature they say are detrimental.
Ricardo Negrón Almodovar , co-founder of the group Del Ambiente, an organization focused on creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ people, especially in the Latino and Puerto Rican community, said the situation is very unfortunate.
SB 1834 and HB 1557, known as the Dont Say Gay bill, seek to prohibit topics of sexual orientation and gender identity from being discussed in primary grades. This will have the effect of leaving LGBTQ+ youth without a secure support system in their homes homeless, as they will no longer be able to count on vital resources in schools, Negrón Almodovar said.
He says that although this has been the main bill discussed in news outlets and local groups, he fears so many dont know about several others that put at risk the life and mental health of so many LGBTQ+ and Latinos in our state.
