although I had taken part in smaller, local ones.

The sheer size of it astonished me, a 17-year-old college freshman. Went with a group of people from college, six of us crammed into a VW bug. I ended up getting tear-gassed, even though I wasn't in the group at the Justice Department.

There were rumors at the time that the Justice Department situation was started by undercover law enforcement agitators in order to create an excuse to attack and gas demonstrators. It would not surprise me in the slightest to find out that that was true.
