Former Colorado elections clerk will remain in prison despite pardon from Trump [View all]

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump issued a symbolic pardon for a Colorado elections clerk on Thursday after she was convicted of orchestrating a security breach to advance false theories of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Tina Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison in August 2024 for state crimes, but Trump's pardon power only extends to federal crimes.

"Democrats have been relentless in their targeting of TINA PETERS, a Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest," the president said on Truth Social, repeating his false claims of election fraud. "Tina is sitting in a Colorado prison for the 'crime' of demanding Honest Elections."

Peters, the former Mesa County clerk, was convicted of allowing a man to misuse a security card to access the election system and being deceptive about that person’s identity. The man was affiliated with MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell, a prominent promoter of false claims that voting machines were manipulated to steal the election from Trump.
