1. The central issue is that Flock sells the systems on one basis

but there are now many cases where Flock and police agencies have actually used the monitoring technology for highly authoritarian purposes. They cited the use of these cameras in Texas to pursue women who might be visiting an abortion provider. People are learning that all over the country, this is minimally helpful for stopping crime, and the real business model is to sell information about your movements to the big data companies.

F;lock made a pitch for our HOA to pay for the installation of these cameras in our neighborhood. The fact is that, while they "might" be helpful in investigating and prosecuting a burglary or other crime, there was no reasonable scenario where they would PREVENT a crime. On that basis, we decided not to buy the system. What we didn't know when we made that decision is that had we bought that system, our cameras would be collecting data going into massive databases tracking every vehicle that entered or exited our neighborhood.

The argument is, "If you are not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear". That is always the authoritarian's argument. But that comes down to how THEY define "doing anything wrong". If you drive to a "No kings" rally, they can monitor you. If you meet some like-minded people at that rally and they drive to your house for a visit and a cup of coffee, now you are associated with those subversives. And so on. It really isn't about catching porch pirates. The big money is in selling your private for profits.
