Psychoanalytic theory has two related concepts that describe the relationship between a mother and son: the Oedipus complex and the Jocasta complex:
Oedipus complex
This theory, developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century, describes a boy's unconscious sexual desire for his mother and hostility towards his father during the phallic stage of psychosexual development, which is usually between the ages of 3 and 6. Freud believed that this psychological condition is universal and that the complex is resolved when the boy identifies with his father as a way to have his mother. However, some critics have noted that there is little empirical evidence to support the theory's validity.

Jocasta complex
This term, introduced by Raymond de Saussure in 1920, describes a mother's incestuous sexual desire for her son. It can also refer to different levels of attachment, such as a domineering but asexual mother-son relationship, which may be more common when the father is absent. The dynamics of the Jocasta complex are said to be described in the Oedipus myth.
