I walked by him one day and saw him napping on the corner of a bookcase and thought, "This cat is living the life of Riley. He's got people opening doors for him, giving him food and water and affection, he's got a free meal ticket for life. He really is living the life of Riley." And so I decided, if he's living the life of Riley, he must be ... Riley! And that became his name.

When I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960s, I used to watch a TV show called "The Life of Riley" starring William Bendix as the title character, Chester A. Riley. I loved that show and never forgot it, even though it has been the late 1950s since I last saw an episode. I was born in 1949 and did not know that it was a radio show in the 1940s before it was a 1950s TV show. I only found out about the radio show when I got a Sirius satellite radio in my car and started hearing episodes of "The Life of Riley" on the old-time radio classics channel. Riley was the perfect name for my old cat.
