The letter is supposed to help humanize you to the Judge. They are not blaming the victim, they are not trying to explain the behavior, they are trying to help the judge get to know the person before sentencing them.

A person, often a close friend asks you for your help at what is usually the lowest point in their life. The easy answer is to turn your back, the hard thing is to support your friend. I seek bad for Ashton and Mila
