When it first blew up they said that they didn't know that those statements would be made public.

That is the real them, not this more carefully curated apology. They immediately regretted those statements insofar as everyone found out that they had made them. The major oopsie was not being careful enough in curating their public image, not the substance of their behavior -- asking leniency for a violent rapist because they valued their association with him.
