Lori Loughlin's privilege shows as judge OKs luxe Mexico trip while she's on supervised release [View all]
Thursday’s decision by a federal judge to let Lori Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, travel to Mexico for a luxe family vacation in June has raised eyebrows, mainly because it’s usually difficult for ex-federal prisoners to get permission to travel in the first year of supervised release.
Prison consultants Larry Levine and Holli Coulman, who both served time in federal prison and counsel people on pre- and post-release planning, said the probation system can be arbitrary when it comes to the restrictions placed on formerly incarcerated people.
Levine told this news organization that it’s “highly irregular” for someone to get permission to travel to another state, much less internationally, if they just left prison a few months earlier.
“Usually, they make you wait about 6 months to a year to let you travel,” said Levine, who helps white-collar defendants navigate the federal court and prison system for Wall Street Prison Consultants.
