There's a scene in Goodfellas where Tommy (Joe Pesci) was supposedly going to a ceremony where he would become a made man.

Instead, they killed him.

Jimmy (Robert DeNiro) goes into a phone booth to make a phone call where he was informed of this.

DeNiro gets distraught as the man on the other end of the call says "There was nothing we could do".

That's how it is in this situation.

"There was nothing I could do".
