14. I had a rough time with sciatica years ago

The dr. I had said there is a muscle by the sciatica nerve, that in 20% of humans, splits to both sides of the nerve. When the muscle is irritated, it swells, so in 20% of people, the sciatica is pinched between those two swollen muscles and hurts like hell.

I got intense physical therapy at a sports medicine center. I would go in and they laid hot weights on the affected area, then did a massage that, while it hurt, also felt good. I was able to show my husband where the epicenter of the pain was, and he did a great job giving me massages at home. I also did a lot of exercises, after the massage at the center and then at home. Some of them were on the chart littlemisssmartypants posted. At the end of my treatment, one of the therapists said I should get an excercise ball, one of the big ones you can sit on.

Just sitting on the ball is passive exercise to strengthen your back muscles. But there are several exercises you can do with the ball. I still have mine, but don't use it like I used to.

I was lucky to get therapy and advice. I will still have trouble with my back in general (the O.P. for sure!) but try to pace myself. My icepack is my friend. So is my hotpad.

Feel better!
