You are not wrong about best sellers keeping the lights on.
In 2005, when I was actively marketing my book, I became friendly with the regional manager of Barnes and Nobel in New York and he told me, that they were going to stop having author signings.
He said that costumers DO NOT BROWSE. They come in with a book in mind that they want to purchase and that’s it. He said that if I was not on TV I didn’t stand a chance of getting wider readership and he was not wrong.
