2. I did. I didn't see any point in replacing a tooth I didn't really need

and nobody could see. The tooth was cracked and had to be removed because the root was getting infected. Dentist said it really didn't have to be replaced, although it was possible that the alignment of the remaining teeth could be affected. That doesn't seem to have happened, as far as I can tell. This was about 10 years ago, no problems since.
