There is the government's case saying there was a mishandling of moneys, which might well be true but it not an egregious crime.

Then there is the much more important argument being made in the court of public opinion which is the reason the government brought the case in the first place. (supposition on my part as is everything I write) The government is saying the SPLC was funneling money into hate groups so they would have a juicy enemy to fight back against in their efforts to raise money. The SPLC counters by saying they were legit payments to informants in the groups.

I've no idea how things will turn out. A few year ago the SPLC had an embarrassing resignation and shake up amongst accusations of racism, sexual harassment, etc combined with a withering expose in the New Yorker. The CEO resigned. The SLLC currently has about a billion dollars, and that's a lot of money. The amounts given to informants from memory totalled about 3+ million over a few orgs and over a few years. Often the people receiving the money were the heads of the orgs. On an individual basis the totals to one person didn't seem to add up to very much money.

Hard to say. More might come out during discovery or they might come to an agreement before trial.
