Most likely, the attitude was there all along, and he simply let it slip out.

I've heard a number of tales of so-called "lifelong progressives" who switched to conservative. Although I'm sure that the number of such cases is not zero, I'm confident that many more of them are like evangelists' dubious stories of "lifelong atheists" who suddenly "saw the light."
