Michael Cohen - The Bravado Of Bullshit [View all]

There comes a point in every con where the mark stops laughing, stops nodding, and starts looking at the bill. In American politics, we’ve reached that moment. The bravado, the bluster, the carnival-barker routine; Trump’s whole political theology of “Because I said so” is finally cracking under the oldest pressure in the world: people can’t afford their lives anymore.

And no slogan—no “America First,” no “A-plus-plus-plus-plus” economy, no rally-hall profanity—can hide the fact that Americans feel broke, tired, and are done being played.

Let’s start with the latest Republican stunt: tomorrow they’re throwing a counter-healthcare bill onto the House floor to “balance” the Democrats’ plan to extend the ACA subsidies for three more years. That’s right; Republicans, who haven’t agreed on how to define the word “healthcare” since Reagan was still eating jelly beans, are suddenly racing a bill to the floor in the eleventh hour. There is no Republican consensus on healthcare. None. Zip. They couldn’t agree on lunch, let alone a policy that actually keeps Americans alive.

But 57% of Americans want the ACA subsidies extended. Fifty-seven percent. In politics, that’s damn near a landslide. And the GOP, in its infinite hubris, is about to tell a majority of the country that their premiums going up is just the price of loyalty to the dear leader.
