7. I was taught that the Civil War was fought over "states rights" back in the late 1950s, growing up in Texas.

Slavery was downplayed, I never heard of the heroism of black women like Sojourner Truth. My mother took me to see a revival of "Gone With the Wind," and she cried during scenes depicting Southern bravery and loss of life. I rode on segregated buses where black people were directed to sit in the back, on little signs with arrows. And, of course, there were no black students in my schools.
