Alan Dershowitz, a former defense attorney for late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will appear before the House Oversight Committee on July 20 for a transcribed interview, according to two sources familiar with the planning. Dershowitz helped secure a controversial plea deal for Epstein in 2008, in which the disgraced financier agreed to plead guilty to two Florida state prostitution charges in exchange for immunity from federal sex-trafficking charges. He served 13 months in prison.
Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre had accused Epstein of trafficking her to Dershowitz, which Dershowitz had denied; she later recanted the accusation as part of a settlement. Dershowitz has denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epsteins crimes.
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) had previously requested that Dershowitz sit for an in-person, videotaped interview in Washington, D.C., as part of the panels ongoing investigation into Epstein.
Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, documents obtained by the Committee, and your former role as Mr. Epsteins attorney, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation, Comer wrote in a letter to Dershowitz.
