BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Alabama Republican Party announced Sunday that its Candidate Committee has rejected a formal challenge to U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s candidacy for governor based on residency requirements.

Party Chair Scott Stadthagen said the committee’s decision followed a review of evidence and sworn testimony presented by both sides during an hours-long hearing in Hoover. “We instructed the committee members to set aside politics and partisanship and base their decision solely upon clarity and common sense,” Stadthagen said in a statement.

Stadthagen did not take questions from the news media. The hearing was not open to the public. Alabama’s constitution requires gubernatorial candidates to be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least 10 years, and a resident of the state for seven years.

According to the party, Tuberville submitted documentation including state tax records, property and home ownership records, a driver’s license, voter registration and other materials intended to demonstrate he meets the residency requirement. The committee concluded the challenge did not present sufficient evidence to the contrary. Tuberville has long faced accusations of living in Florida rather than the state he represents in Washington. He has faced the same claim as he runs for governor.
