We had a reading instructor. With programmed reading selections, vocab sheets, purple flash cards .... all bought from one of the big textbook publishers. These guys were rolling the school board, the Supers, the teachers, and the taxpayers all in one throw. You'd start the year with textbook #1. October they decide to pull it. Next year subsequent class has a third program.

They'd be better off to choose 5 important classics a year and read them out loud. With Friday as writing-in-class day. All the upper crust literature is not working. Textbooks are not working. Teachers of literature expected cultural awareness from the students that was not there yet. Did I understand irony, The Sun Also Rises, All Quiet on the Western Front, A Midsummer Night's Dream? Emphatically no.
