(ABC22/FOX44) – As of May 1st, one of America’s largest drug manufacturers, is no more.

Purdue Pharma, the former maker of OxyContin, is now owned by a non-profit, who says it’ll be supporting those who have been impacted by the opioid crisis.

The new company, is now be called Knoa Pharma LLC, took over Purdue’s assets. According to the settlement, the entire Sackler family, who owned and operated Purdue, is now barred from selling opioids in the U.S. and won’t have any involvement in this new company.

Purdue was sentenced in late April, on criminal charges, for its role in fueling the opioid epidemic. Federal data shows more than 900,000 people have died due to opioid overdoses since 1999.
