their military capabilities are limited so they can't completely close the strait, just do as much damage as they can.

Asian and European countries use that strait a lot for accessing the Suez canal so those countries might get involved militarily. The US has bombed the Houthis last year. Hegseth posted the plans out over a Signal chat. The Saudis also bomb them in response to attacks on their territory.
