The war gave Trump an excuse to lift sanctions against buying Russian oil, and the subsequent sales have bailed out an economy that was failing. Now Putin has plenty of money to continue attacking Ukraine and no urgency to negotiate any peace deal. Republicans in Congress refused to stop the war by requiring the approval of Congress, so Russia is happy with them.
