Finding out there is such a thing as the "American Mediterranean Sea" at this stage of my life is as disconcerting as learning that despite my Chicago born-and-raised childhood, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are technically the same body of water.

I think most of us were taught about the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, etc.

It is technically a large body of water (but not as large as an ocean) between North and South America.
