I can truthfully say I have no memory of ever having heard that word until now, but I don't think I am likely to ever forget it. Distasteful as it is, I'm glad to have been made aware of it. It's useful to know about these things in order to avoid potential offense.

From the info my googling turned up, it seems clear that it is indeed a nasty slur. The website of Stop AAPI Hate, a U.S.-based coalition dedicated to fighting racism and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, calls it as "the most common anti-Asian slur in online extremist spaces," adding that it's "used to deride not just Hindus and Sikhs but South Asians in general."
