Conversations with people who are not capable of showing respect from the beginning are not worth having. They are not conversations. They are people coming in with an agenda and not made in good faith, they don't care about your perspective, data or ideas. If the party is called the Democratic party and you refuse to acknowledge that, you are not operating in good faith, you are trying to dominate the conversation from the outset.
