Even though he was a true American hero in WWII, it didn't matter.
The allegiance to the Pope propaganda was GOP political slander and theater.

My father was an Irish Catholic from Boston the same time JFK was there.
The love of America and freedom was palpable.

Old school Irish Catholics, recently off the boat were more cultural Catholics.
Not a lot of carrying on about religion, etc.
The Irish Americans here are the ones who went all evangelical and religious.
