Irish, jews, Italians and of course asians, and many others were all considered non-white. Catholics were also undesirable because of worries of their allegiance to the Pope instead of the United States, that was their theory of course. That carried all the way to the 60s when Kennedy almost didn’t run because he was Catholic.
