American Airlines nationwide ground stop lifted, FAA says

The nationwide ground stop on American Airlines flights has been lifted, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement at about 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The airline requested a nationwide ground stop due to a technical issue earlier Tuesday morning, the FAA confirmed, stopping all American flights at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway International Airports — along with every other airport — during the start of a busy Christmas Eve travel day.

American Airlines has not provided an update since the FAA reported the ground stop has been lifted, including on what specifically the technical issue was or if there will be any continuing ramifications on its flights Tuesday.

The airline issued a statement early Tuesday morning, saying: “A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning. Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
