In reply to the discussion: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio closed for hours due to drone activity [View all]Kid Berwyn
(22,609 posts)52. The drones came back to WPAFB last night.
Thanks for the heads-up on what Robin radar has available. I imagine the Pentagon and the members of the Intelligence Community also will deploy them or similar systems.
Judging by all the assholes shining laser pointers at aircraft in the world, I imagine there would be assholes who find joy in interfering with manned aircraft. I am all for the investigation of incidents, dentification of perpetrators, and lessons learned applied to prevent their recurrence. However, their historic actions do no match what some of the witnesses to the recent drone wave have reported.
Drones spotted near, over Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Monday night
WHIO Staff, December 17, 2024
Excerpt...
The drones were spotted in the vicinity of and over Area A and Area B late Dec. 16 into early Dec. 17, according to a media release.
Installation leaders have determined that none of the incursions impacted base residents, facilities, or assets. The Wright-Patterson AFB airspace was not affected by the incursions, the release states.
The number of drones and their sizes and configurations have fluctuated, according to the base.
News Center 7 has previously reported that drones were reported at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, causing the airspace to be restricted for four hours from Dec. 13 into Dec. 14.
The base encouraged anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact local police or security forces.

So why is the US government, including the Air Force, having such a hard time tracking down the drones and their "pilots"?
I don't think the tech needs an upgrade as much as much as the authorities need to level with We the People. They are whistling in the dark if they don't think these things are a potential hazard to navigation and national security.
My guess is that it's not a simple question of finding a few bad actors. Some of these reports indicate they are part of a phenomenon that has interacted with humanity for time immemorial.
Me? I've been getting mocked on DU since for writing about this ever since I've been around -- 2002.

One theory is it's a company that makes large drones and is testing them out.

Exactly, and if the government knows for a fact that they aren't a threat...

I didn't hear how close they were. The FAA rule years ago was 5 miles or 5 nautical miles one or the other...
