They were probably afraid the endangered species would go extinct and it would have more symbolism than they wanted. Recently the bird was declared safe so it will persevere.

....like when New Zealand foolishly chose the Dodo Bird as their national symbol, or Canada with the long gone Passenger Pigeon. (JK)

Had we waited until the next president we might have chosen the Peacock. It puffs itself up to appear bigger than it is, it's known as "The bird in borrowed feathers", and the name implies it's a vulgar dick
