My husband is a UK citizen and obtaining his residency in Italy. He started the process last year and it was both frustrating and hilarious dealing with the authorities in small towns.

That part about the police coming by to make sure you are where you say you are happens there as well. The hoops you had to jump through sound very similar to what I will have to do.

I have heard that things get easier the further south you go, so I will report back to you once I start the process.

I have gone through this in Mexico and successfully got my temporary residency. Now I want to go for the permanent!

Again, thank you! I think it's worth it to go through all this, so I'm going for it.
